How to Clean and Recoat Your Deck with EQUISOL

Regular maintenance is the secret to extending your deck's life. In most locations, an annual cycle of cleaning and recoating does the trick! 

What You'll Need

  • EQUISOL Vitalise  — removes dirt, grease, rust, iron stains, water stains and old colour tones from existing oiled timber
  • Stiff-bristle brush or broom
  • Pressure washer and garden hose
  • Protective gloves and eyewear
  • EQUISOL Pro E365 - penetrating oil for timber decking

 

Step 1: Clear the deck of all loose items and leaves etc

Clear the deck of all furniture, pot plants, and other items. Sweep away loose debris such as leaves and dirt. Wet any surrounding plants or garden beds to protect them from product runoff.

Step 2: Clean decking with EQUISOL Vitalise

Use EQUISOL Vitalise to remove old colour tone, ingrained dirt and stains. Mix as per manufacturers instructions, apply to timber with a stiff bristle brush and keep moist for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Vitalise will lighten the timber, and remove ingrained dirt.

Step 3: Protect with EQUISOL Pro E365

Once your deck is dry, you can apply the penetrating oil - EQUISOL Pro E365. A penetrating oil will go beyond the surface of the timber, nourishing the timber internally as well as providing a beautiful matt finish. Use a colour tone from the EQUISOL range, to achieve your desired colour. Apply no more than two coats and make sure your coat is light - don't be tempted to over saturate the timber on application. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second one. A lambswool applicator is the recommended tool for domestic situations.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always work in the direction of the timber grain
  • Preparation is everything - don't be tempted to take short cuts
  • Avoid applying products in extreme heat
  • Wear protective gloves and eyewear when handling cleaning products
  • Check the weather forecast — avoid application if rain is expected within 24 hours
